World Rowing Places Its Trust in Duisburg – Regatta Duisburg to Host the Final World Rowing Cup Before Los Angeles 2028

The Duisburg Regatta Course will host World Rowing Cup III in 2028. World Rowing officially announced the decision last week, marking the return of the prestigious World Rowing Cup series to Duisburg after more than 30 years. For the host organization, Regatta Duisburg e.V., the award represents far more than another major international sporting event—it is a clear vote of confidence in Duisburg as a rowing venue and in the close partnership with World Rowing.

From the perspective of the Organizing Committee, this decision confirms that World Rowing intends to continue the long-term partnership established through the 2026 World Rowing Under 23 Championships. While the U23 Championships will be the sporting highlight of the summer of 2026, they also mark the beginning of a shared journey that will continue with the World Rowing Cup in 2028.

“The awarding of World Rowing Cup III in 2028 fills us with great pride. It is recognition of the work accomplished over the past years and, at the same time, a strong vote of confidence in our entire team. Our full attention is currently focused on this year’s Under 23 World Championships. Together with World Rowing, we want to deliver an unforgettable event for the athletes and the fans, laying the foundation for the World Rowing Cup in 2028,” said Tobias Weysters, President of the Organizing Committee.

The 2028 World Rowing Cup will also be the final World Cup regatta before the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. As the Olympic rowing competitions in 2028 will be raced over 1,500 metres due to the characteristics of the Olympic venue, the World Rowing Cup in Duisburg will also be contested over this distance. It is currently planned to be the only international regatta over 1,500 metres during the Olympic cycle, giving the event exceptional sporting significance as the final opportunity for the world’s best crews to measure themselves ahead of the Olympic Games.

Duisburg’s Mayor, Sören Link, also welcomed the return of the World Rowing Cup to the Wedau Regatta Course:

“I am delighted that the 2028 World Rowing Cup will be held at our regatta course. The athletes will find perfect conditions for top-level performances at Duisburg Sportpark. Whether on the water or in the grandstands, together we will create an unforgettable experience.”

The decision has also been met with great enthusiasm among the athletes. In World Rowing’s official announcement, Olympic and World Champion Oliver Zeidler described the return of the World Rowing Cup to Germany as a long-awaited moment for German rowing. He also highlighted the rich tradition of the Wedau Regatta Course and the unique atmosphere created by the home crowd, which, he said, would make the event a truly exceptional experience.

For Regatta Duisburg, the award is also the result of a collective effort by many partners. The club extends its sincere thanks to World Rowing for its confidence, as well as to the City of Duisburg, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the German Rowing Federation, its many sponsors and supporters, and all partner organizations for their outstanding commitment and support.

Special thanks go to the members of the Organizing Committee, the many volunteers, officials, and supporting rowing clubs. Their extraordinary dedication makes international events of this scale possible and has played a decisive role in establishing Duisburg’s reputation as a trusted host for international rowing competitions.

Before looking ahead to 2028, however, all attention is focused on the 2026 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, which will take place from 23 to 26 July 2026 at the Duisburg Regatta Course. More than 1,000 athletes from around 50 nations are expected, making it one of the largest international sporting events of the year in North Rhine-Westphalia.
