duisburg2026.comDuisburg once again reinforces its status as an international hub for watersports: at this year’s General Assembly, Regatta Duisburg e.V. reached a major milestone. With the official merger with the Kanu-Regatta-Verein Duisburg e.V., a new, powerful organization has been formed that will shape regatta sports at the Wedau venue for years to come.
For decades, the Duisburg regatta course has been the stage for top-level national and international competitions in rowing and canoeing. While Regatta Duisburg (formerly International Wedau Regatta e.V.) has primarily been responsible for rowing events, the Kanu-Regatta-Verein Duisburg has set benchmarks in canoe sport by hosting numerous World Cups and most recently the ICF Canoe Sprint & Para Canoe World Championships 2023.
The merger now completed is the result of a process initiated in 2024, when both organizations agreed to combine their strengths. The goal was clear: to leverage synergies, streamline structures, and respond effectively to the challenges of limited volunteer resources. Key foundations were already laid in 2025, including the renaming to Regatta Duisburg e.V., the introduction of a modern constitution enabling equal representation of rowing and canoeing, and the development of a new visual identity along with a contemporary website presence.
With the merger now formally completed under notarial supervision, this strategic path has reached its next milestone—while simultaneously opening an exciting new chapter. “We are creating a strong platform for both sports and setting the course for a successful future,” says Tobias Weysters, President Rowing of Regatta Duisburg.
In terms of leadership, Regatta Duisburg continues to rely on continuity: all current board members were re-elected during the General Assembly. Tobias Weysters remains Chairman for Rowing, Stefan Wallat continues as Chairman for Canoeing, and Thomas Küpper is responsible for Administration & Finance. Moritz Pilaski and Jürgen Joachim complete the board as associate members.
Beyond structural developments, the focus is also firmly on the future—particularly on the major sporting highlight ahead: the World Rowing Under 23 Championships 2026 in Duisburg. Following an intensive strategy workshop of the organizing team last weekend, preparations are progressing at full speed. The next key milestone is just around the corner: World Rowing will visit Duisburg this Wednesday and Thursday for an official site inspection, gaining a comprehensive overview of the organization, infrastructure, and current planning status.
With combined strengths, clear structures, and a shared passion, Regatta Duisburg is looking confidently to the future—and invites sports fans from around the world to become part of this success story.
