Regatta Duisburg e.V. will now take over the organization of all canoe and rowing competitions at the Duisburg regatta course. The newly founded association was created through the merger of the International Wedau Regatta Association and the Canoe Regatta Association Duisburg.

The first major event that the new organizing team will bring to the regatta course will be the World Rowing Under 23 Championships from July 23 to 26.

Further international events are already in the pipeline: Duisburg is in discussions to host a Canoe Sprint World Cup on the regatta course in the Duisburg Sportpark for the first time since the 2023 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships. In addition, the association is already in close contact with the World Rowing Federation regarding the hosting of a World Rowing Cup.

The board of Regatta Duisburg consists of the following dedicated members:

  • Thomas Küpper, President Finance & Administration
  • Tobias Weysters, President Rowing and, prior to the merger, Chairman of the International Wedau Regatta Association
  • Stefan Wallat, President Canoeing

Additionally, Jürgen Joachim, previously President of the Canoe Regatta Association Duisburg, and Moritz Pilaski were elected as board members.

The volunteer preparation team for the upcoming competitions on the Duisburg regatta course in the Sportpark will include members from both former associations.

They have already been working for months to make the U23 World Rowing Championships a success for Duisburg and the region. A first‑class regatta could also serve as proof that the city is ready for the Olympic bid of the CologneRhineRuhr city alliance.

Cooperation Already established during the European Rowing Under 23 Championships and the 2023 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships

Thomas Küpper says about the founding of Regatta Duisburg e.V.:
“During the major rowing and canoeing regattas of recent years, the specialists from both teams had already worked together, making the successes of the 2020 U23 European Rowing Championships and the 2023 Canoe World Championships possible in the first place. It was therefore only logical to formally combine our strengths and establish a new association. The plans for such a merger had existed for some time — now we have implemented them.”

To present itself effectively to the public, Regatta Duisburg developed its own visual identity. The association now also presents itself on its dedicated website at www.regatta-duisburg.com.
